Aeva Technologies (AEVA) has struck a major deal with South Korean electronics giant LG Innotek, a subsidiary of LG.
For Aeva Technologies, the partnership secures a strategic collaboration and a $50 million equity investment to accelerate deployment of its 4D lidar solutions.
In return, the investment gives LG Innotek a roughly 6% ownership stake in the California-based sensor maker.
The partnership centers on commercializing Aeva’s frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) perception platform, an advanced sensing technology used in radar and lidar systems.
Unlike conventional lidar, which estimates distance based on time-of-flight, Aeva’s technology measures both distance and velocity for every pixel in real time.
Aeva CEO and co-founder Soroush Salehian said the deal validates FMCW as the next evolution in machine perception. “LG Innotek’s investment underscores the growing recognition of FMCW as the future of sensing and perception technology,” Salehian said.
“Together, we see a tremendous opportunity to bring Aeva's perception platform to a wide range of applications — wherever machines need to perceive and understand their surroundings.”
Focus on automotive first
Initially, the two companies will focus on the automotive sector.
LG Innotek will manufacture and supply Aeva’s Atlas Ultra 4D lidar sensor, slated for a 2027 launch. Aeva previously announced in March that a global top-10 automaker selected its lidar for a next-generation vehicle platform, though the OEM’s name has not been disclosed.
Beyond automotive, the companies plan to co-develop new sensing products for industrial automation, enabling indoor and outdoor autonomous equipment.
They’ll also explore applications in robotics and consumer devices. LG Innotek CEO Hyuksoo Moon described the alliance as a long-term push to “grow together as key players leading the next-generation LiDAR market.”
Expanding into infrastructure and trucks
Aeva’s lidar isn’t limited to cars.
The company has rolled out its perception technology for smart infrastructure and transportation, providing airport security and monitoring solutions at SFO, Tampa International Airport (TPA), and JFK Terminal One in New York City.
Earlier this month, Aeva expanded its partnership with Daimler Truck North America to speed production of 4D lidar sensors for Daimler’s autonomous trucks.
Aeva plans to scale manufacturing up to 200,000 units annually, with funding support from Daimler, to serve multiple customers beyond the trucking giant.
Aeva’s stock has skyrocketed 330.1% year-to-date, signaling growing investor confidence that its FMCW-based 4D lidar can lead the next wave of autonomous sensing.
